What is the meaning of Halal (حلال)?
Halal is an Arabic word that means "permitted". In Islamic terms, it means permitted according to the rules of Islam. It is most often referred to in relation to food, but it includes any type of action permitted by Islam.
The opposite of Halal is Haram or sometimes called non-Halal. It refers to anything that is considered illegal according to Islamic teachings. Although it is often used in reference to food, it can also refer to other unlawful acts in Islam, such as theft, bribery, etc.
What does 'halal restaurant' mean?
A halal restaurant generally refers to an eating establishment that offers food prepared in accordance with Muslim religious practices.
Indeed, all foods that are permitted to be eaten according to the teachings of Islam are called halal foods. This is essentially any food that does not fall into the Haram (or forbidden) category.
