Disappearance of the Louvre Pyramid

This will undoubtedly be the most beautiful and intelligent work by the French artist JR.

JR engages with his art in the largest gallery in the world, public space. Over the past ten years, his monumental photographic collages have taken over the walls of cities around the globe: Rio de Janeiro, Kenya, New York, Le Havre, Shanghai...

His way of working is spectacular. Through public interventions, the artist highlights the issue of imagery, its widespread distribution, and the dynamics of the intimate sphere within mass culture.

Until June 27, he is the guest of the largest museum in the world, with this stunning anamorphosis: the disappearance of one of Paris' symbols, the Louvre Pyramid.

JR's collage engulfs the pyramid only from a very specific and precisely chosen observation point.

Yesterday we went there to take the already famous photo. We encountered the front road closed and a line of tourists waiting for their chance to reach the exact spot where the pyramid with JR's collage disappears and blends perfectly with the real building.

In the midst of our wait, JR himself and his team arrived. The artist apologized and said he would disrupt us for a few minutes. He would take a photo "touching" the tip of the pyramid, thereby emulating the photo that hundreds of tourists take every day (read our article here).
