The Louvre Pyramid
The Louvre Pyramid
The Louvre Pyramid is one of the most iconic structures in Paris. Learn a bit about its history and watch the video we made about it.
The Louvre Pyramid is a project by architect I. M. Pei and was inaugurated in 1989.
It is located in the central courtyard of the Louvre Museum, the Cour Napoléon, and serves as its main entrance.
The pyramid is a glass and metal structure, standing 20.6 meters tall on a square base of 35 meters per side.
Legend has it that the number of glass panes in the pyramid is exactly 666, a number associated with the devil. This myth resurfaced when author Dan Brown confirmed this information in the book The Da Vinci Code.
In reality, according to official information from the museum, the pyramid has 673 panes: 603 diamonds and 70 triangles.

Controversy and Redemption
Like almost every major contemporary architectural work in Paris, its construction sparked a great debate.
The argument from the opposition was that the pyramid - even more so as it is made of glass! - was out of context with the classic museum.
The supporters believed that exactly this clash between the contemporary and the classic was interesting and enriching.
Over the years, the pyramid has established itself as the architectural beauty it is and has either won the favor - or indifference - of the majority.
The best response to this controversy comes from tourists. By taking their 'optical illusion' photos with their finger on the tip of the pyramid, they playfully claim the monument, give it a new meaning, and, above all, show their affection. I bet that's the dream of the Montparnasse Tower.
