If you find yourself near Notre Dame Cathedral or Place des Vosges, you might consider taking a small detour towards Tour Saint-Jacques. This bell tower stands about 170 feet tall and is a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic architecture, the same late Gothic style found in the details of Milan Cathedral.

Much appreciated by the Surrealists, this solitary bell tower dominated by gargoyles is all that remains of the Church of Saint-Jacques-la-Boucherie, built in the 16th century and destroyed in 1797. Beneath the bell tower, a statue of Blaise Pascal commemorates his historic experiments on atmospheric pressure. At the northwest corner, a statue of Saint James the Greater overlooks the platform that once held a small meteorological station.

The tower has undergone significant restoration, which was completed in early 2009. In 1998, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tower is not far from Notre Dame Cathedral, Place des Vosges, the Conciergerie, and Sainte-Chapelle.
