Tourist vandalism at the Pont des Arts, when tourists replace locks with drawings.

The issue of "love locks" is delicate and controversial. Initially, the phenomenon was confined to the Pont des Arts, which became globally known as the Lock Bridge. With the removal and renovation of the bridge's railings, locks proliferated throughout the city. The remedy was inadequate, and the spell turned against the sorcerer.

Here's an example of tourist vandalism at the Debilly Footbridge, a walkway linking the Palais de Tokyo museum and the Eiffel Tower. It is not very well-known, is not located in the city center, and sees little foot traffic compared to famous central bridges.

A close examination of the situation reveals the damage caused to the structure of the Debilly by the locks. We find them hanging even on the electric wiring.

Meanwhile, at the Pont des Arts, the locks were replaced by childlike drawings of hearts surrounding couples' names. I avoid using the term graffiti. At certain moments, graffiti becomes street art and a symbol of creative energy. In this case, it is merely visual pollution.

A little common sense wouldn't hurt anyone. Does the couple scribbling on the transparent glass protection, which is intentionally clear, consider their scribble more attractive or interesting than the Seine and its monuments?

From the perspective of citizens, exasperated by so much childishness and the damaging of heritage, the practice should be banned and offenders reprimanded. From the state's viewpoint, given the potential tourist appeal of the ritual, the issue is treated with kid gloves. And the solution to clean the interventions of the "eternal love vote" along the banks of the Seine has not yet been found.

The problem is that from the visitors' perspective, this practice is romantic and harmless. Let everyone know that vandalism is a set of acts constituting a deliberate degradation of private and public property. These acts are sanctioned by law. As an example, the tag. If a drawing causes slight degradation-if the paint is washable-the maximum fine is 3,750 euros. If the degradation is more significant, the fine will be 30,000 euros (read here).
