Paris ❤ Travel tips and favourite places

Champs-Élysées, Montmartre, Louvre, Montparnasse - the sound of these names alone is usually enough to make the eyes of many shine. The city of Paris has a very special flair and is still synonymous with romance.

And if you spend a romantic weekend or a longer holiday in this metropolis, you'll soon realise why the city has been given its title of honour. Just stroll through the winding streets, past the impressive buildings and sights, or experience the city's glittering lights from a Baton Mouches, an excursion boat on the Seine - preferably hand in hand...

Paris makes you happy

What other city has an avenue of Elysian (i.e. overjoying) fields? The world-famous Boulevard Avenue des Champs-Élysées, between the Place de la Concorde and the world-famous Arc de Triomphe, is a boulevard that truly deserves its name. It is 70 metres wide, lined with trees, and one shop with luxurious brand-name fashion follows the next, closely packed with prestigious architecture. For shopping fans, strolling along here is an unforgettable experience. Those who have gathered enough inspiration can then strike out in a multitude of department stores, shopping centres and markets.

All roads lead to the city of love

Paris is a city of superlatives. Even though the city area is relatively small at just 105 square kilometres, it is the most densely populated major European city - around 21,000 inhabitants live here per square kilometre! There are over 2.2 million inhabitants in total. Paris is not only the capital of the Republic of France, but also the political, economic, cultural and transport centre of the centralised country. A total of three airports and six terminus stations are located here. The most important of these is the Gare du Nord, where many tourists arrive in Paris. But a flight is also suitable for getting there, especially for a short trip when only a weekend is available for the Paris holiday.

Tips for a holiday in Paris

After you have checked into your hotel (there are hotels in Paris to suit every budget), you should set off to discover the cosmopolitan city. The best way to start your city trip to Paris is with a visit to the Sacré-Cœur pilgrimage church on the hill of Montmartre. From here, you not only have an impressive view over the city, but you can also experience how Paris slowly awakens when you climb up early in the morning: soft snatches of speech can be heard, the smell of croissants and coffee is in the air. The perfect start to your trip to Paris! After this moment of tranquillity, you should start your holiday in the artists' quarter of Montmartre and let yourself be enchanted by the ambience of the winding streets before conquering the rest of the city.

Visitors to Paris are spoilt for choice: there are countless sights of all kinds, museums, squares, parks, theatres and clubs waiting to be discovered. Over the centuries, the city has seen significant flourishing in the arts and hosted a total of six world exhibitions, making it a popular destination for a trip even back then. In the 20th century, it also developed into a centre for exclusive fashion, philosophy and food culture. Around 10,000 restaurants await guests. Because before you start into the turbulent Parisian nightlife, for example at the famous Moulin Rouge in the Pigalle district, you need a sensible basis.

Nothing works here without the metro!

A bus tour is usually the best way to get an initial overview. On such a trip through the metropolis, you can easily get to know many of the 20 districts (arrondissements) and their neighbourhoods (quartiers). But then you should change to the metro, the Parisian underground, with which you can easily reach the most important sights: One is, of course, the city's landmark: the 300.51-metre-high Eiffel Tower, a steel truss tower built for the 1898 World's Fair. If you don't want to wait long to go up, you can get your tickets online in advance. A detour to Île de la Cité, the actual city centre, is also a must; Notre Dame Cathedral is located there. Just a few steps away is the Palais de la Cité with the palace chapel Sainte-Chapelle. which has a truly otherworldly aura thanks to its stained glass windows.

Want to meet the Mona Lisa for real? You can - the lady is waiting for you at the Musée du Louvre, the former city palace of the French kings, which houses a collection of 380,000 works of art. Its landmark is the glass pyramid visible from afar. Fans of modern art will get their money's worth at the Musée d'Orsay. The Panthéon, the so-called Hall of Fame of France, is also worth a visit; here you will find the tombs of Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Pierre and Marie Curie, for example.

Highlights for scary fans and family people

A sight of the eerie kind is the catacombs of Paris. The largest tomb in the world with its widely ramified corridors houses the bones of six million people and can be visited on a guided catacomb tour. A trip to the surrounding area, to Disneyland Paris for example, will quickly take your mind off things. A holiday in Paris can be ideally combined with a visit to Donald and Mickey in Disneyland Park. Insider tips for your trip to Paris can be found at reisereporter!
